The History of Fitzpatrick Castle
🏰 Origins: The Estate and Castle
The holiday apartments are part of the grounds of what is historically known as Killiney Castle, a manor house originally built in 1740 by Colonel John Malpas.
Over the centuries the estate changed hands several times — including to Captain Maunsell and Colonel Loftus, who enhanced the property and landscape.
In 1840, Robert Warren expanded the house and added castellated Gothic features (turrets, battlements), giving it the castle-like appearance seen today.
🏨 Transformation into a Hotel
The castle later fell into disrepair and had mixed uses in the early 20th century (including being occupied during political conflicts).
In 1971, the property was purchased and transformed into a 4-star hotel by Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick — marking the start of its life as a hospitality venue and the foundation of what’s now known as the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel.
🌳 Holiday Apartments Development
The Fitzpatrick Castle Holiday Apartments themselves were developed later on part of the old orchard and landscaped gardens of the castle estate. They sit next to the main hotel building on the brow of Killiney Hill, overlooking Dublin Bay.
These self-catering apartments are designed for holiday stays and offer modern accommodation while allowing guests access to the hotel’s facilities — such as the gym, swimming pool, restaurants and leisure amenities.
In the past, the holiday homes were also affiliated with vacation exchange services (like Interval International), reflecting their use as resort holiday accommodation.
🧭 Location and Setting
The homes occupy a peaceful, landscaped setting next to the historic castle hotel in the affluent coastal suburb of Killiney, famous for scenic views, coastal walks, and proximity to Dublin city and Dalkey village.
📌 Summary
So, in essence:
The site began as an 18th-century manor house (Killiney Castle) with deep local history.
It became a family-run luxury hotel under the Fitzpatricks in 1971.
The holiday apartments were added later in the castle’s grounds’ orchard to provide self-catering accommodation but with full access to the hotel’s amenities.
